First, I think this author shows a great deal of promise and I look forward to the continuation of this series. Being a fellow Minnesotan, I was delighted to see the action centered around our beautiful city of Duluth. The device of parallel magical/non-magical realities works quite well. I found myself developing a lot of sympathy for the two teenage protagonists who are drawn into the magical world. The idea that a map, in the proper hands, can be an object of immense power is intriguing. The author systematically advances his plot while keeping back information to be revealed as the series progresses. As a mature adult, I would have appreciated more depth & descriptive prose to enrich both the characterizations and environment, but I realize my age group is not the target audience. There is, however, one serious flaw to the enjoyment of this book. The author HAS TO hire a professional proofreader. You can't have spelling and grammatical errors on almost every page without irritating your readership.
