I prefer technical scifi over fantasy. This is not technical but the story and characters are very engaging. The alien aspects have enough limitations to be believable although not explained so the story doesn't devolve into fantasy. I've enjoyed both books, the second a bit more, and am really looking forward to the 3rd... last? Better than average YA literature. No social/ political preaching, just excellent story telling!
