Perfect for waffle fries using the thickest setting and the right amount of pressure. Still thinner and crispier than chick-fil-a fries but super yummy. Very quick and easyI like the product. It’s sturdy and easy to clean. The only thing I disliked was it didn’t tell you that you had to order the safety holder separatelyWaffle Fries are the Cadillac of French Fries - because of the increased surface area exposed to oil, the fries come out with a crispness that no other cut can match. Take cottage fries for example - they can be quite good right out of the fryer, but let them sit in a bowl for a few minutes and they start to turn into a soggy, oily clump. Waffle Fries have no such issue - if cooked correctly, they will remain crispy for over an hour before starting to turn soggy.However. cutting Potato Waffles is no easy task. After observing a cheapie cutter at the Wisconsin State Fair this Summer, I decided to take the plunge and purchase this cutter. I had struck out last year with a Cuisinart V-blade mandoline ($80) that was supposed to do Waffle Fries but it never worked for me - the cuts kept letting stuck in a seam on the mandoline, and the holder just stunk - it kept slipping.I know you're supposed to order the food holder separately for this cutter, but I already had a plastic "Cowboy Hat" holder from a State Fair V-blade mandoline from several years back - and it works perfectly. When cutting Waffle Fries, you're supposed to rotate the potato 90 degrees each time, but you don't need to rotate it 360 degrees 90 degrees at a time, just back and forth so the crinkle ridges are going perpendicular to the blade's ridges - this is much easier - back and forth, back and forth - easy strokes gets you perfect waffles every time - however keep in mind that the thicker cuts can be pretty tricky - you have to find the correct speed and that takes a little practice. If you don't have the plastic "Cowboy Hat" food holder you could easily make due with a couple of corn on the cob holders stuck into the potato, but do be careful, it's easy to cut a finger or knuckle on the blade. I've noticed, however, that very hard sweet potatoes or Yucca might require more force than this cutter can stand - so I'd stick to regular potatoes with this one.Pros:• Very sharp, easy cuts• Nicely made, solid construction• Two thicknesses - for chips and hearty waffles• Platform locks into safety position when not using the cutter• Is not expensiveCons:• Is not expensive - not for commercial use - likely won't last with everyday use and blade is not replaceable and can't be sharpened• Can be tricky to get the waffle cuts right - needs some practice• Platform is fairly narrow, making larger waffles impossible to cut• Requires safety holder, no safety available while cuttingThis is a good quality product and works just fine. However if you are looking to cut waffle fries that are as thick as you'd find at Chick Fil A, etc, this isn't what you're looking for. I had to search for and buy an "XXL waffle cutter" elsewhere. This one cuts waffle patterns just fine but they are still pretty thin for my preference, even when set on the thickest setting possible. Still giving it 5 stars because it's a good product and works as expected.I've only used it to cut four potatoes into waffle fries so far, but it has performed well in that task. It's much, much sturdier than the first waffle cutter I bought, and making it as sturdy as I'd like would probably drive the price up by at least double, if not triple. So, if you're wanting to create your own Chick-Fil-A waffle fries, this is the way to get started. The product works fine for sweet potatoe waffle fries. I have two dislikes, one minor and one moderate. The plastic is stained orange from cutting sweet potatoes, not a big deal, it seems odd. The cutter is a little flimsy for me. It does take some force to cut sweet potatoes and eventually I believe this product will fatigue and break. It works fine for my needs, I would recommend if needing a cost effective kitchen tool.Step one... buy the safety holder. Slicers and mandolins will hurt you. My first slicer of this type and I was both surprised and pleased at how sturdy it seems to be and how easily it sliced through a potato. I would advise not to fully trust the SAFE position. It does cover the blade, but if any pressure is applied to the plate, it will flex enough to make a nasty cut possible The #2 position makes a very pronounced waffle but for my taste, a bit thin for a fry. On the other hand, too thick for a wavy chip. I may experiment with a spacer to raise the plate a tad to thin the chip. The #1 position made for a meatier fry but with fewer perforations. It is possible to remove the plate for even thicker slices. Of course my comments above do not apply if you're slicing for salads, soups, garnishes etc. For what it's intended to do, and for what it does, I'd subtract 1/2 star for potato chip fail and 1/2 for no safety holder.I already had the Bohrn V-Slicer so I was excited to get this 1. It is a great product and I really like it.Who sells a deadly sharp wicked chop your finger tips off tool and sells the safety guard separately? I'm also really bummed by the cheap and flimsy feeling plastic that it's made out of. I had WAY more faith in something made in Germany and wasn't expecting to be so underwhelmed. Not sure if my other review went through - as it was from mobile (I apologize for the brevity, if it did!) - Simply, after reading other comments it was as expected: no extra safety guard, feels like flimsy plastic, through the blade works great! Used it for cross cutting apples and potatoes no problem, and I improvised the safety guard from another mandolin. I got what I expected, worked as wished for, full 5 star satisfaction - wish it was about $7-10 cheaper, though, considering the materials used to make it.Nice kitchen tool .Blades are extremely sharp .Satisfied with the result but yes I regret I didn't purchase it's food holder thinking the one which am having already will work but that doesn't fit in it due to size difference ( width ) of slicer .So please if any one thinking to buy , do opt the one having food holder also .This is seriously sharp and makes great waffle cuts! I definitely recommend a safety glove in addition to the holder (not included with this model, but one came with the V-1001 V-Slicer Plus).
