I always thought that the battle between Darrow and Bryan in the Scopes "Monkey Trials" was a case of two points of view, eg. "Literal" Creationism vs "Classic Darwinian" Evolutionist theories. The nuances of diverging views on each side of the battle during the post WWI years became clear and enlightened me. "Science is the truth", or "Religion is the truth", depending on one's particular viewpoint, becomes somewhat irrelevant during those times. For example, the Eugenics theory that would create a Utopia on Earth, was born from a racist and witchcraft viewpoint dressed up as science, alongside true scientific advancements, and although real science triumphed in the end, there were decades where the outcome wasn't certain. Both of those viewpoints were called "Biology". The religious side of the equation had similar things going on. Is the Universe 6,000 years old, or was each day of Creation millions of years, or did God create and then Evolution took hold? This was a hard read but very enlightening. Dr. Johnson captured the internal social, political, and scientific views of early 20th Century, and potential outcomes each view may have brought. I highly recommend this read to anyone interested in history or science. It was thoroughly researched and well documented in the footnotes, which I referred to occasionally to look up century old colloquialisms not in our current Lexicon
